Why did Benjamin Franklin oppose Parliament, but not the King?
Q. My American history textbook talks about the aftermath of the Townshend Duties, and how the British didn't want to give up their authority to pass laws governing the colonies. One thing which jumped out at me was this: Colonial spokesmen such as Benjamin Franklin declared that the colonies were independent of Parliament and owed their allegiance only to the monarch. Franklin conceded that the colonies in the past had accepted laws passed by Parliament, but in the future he advised the colonists to "never adopt or acknowledge an Act of Parliament but by a formal law of our own [legislatures]." So did he mean that they should look up to the King as a symbol? Didn't the king have any lawmaking authority? If he did, then that's not a… [cont.]

A. No, the English Civil War in the 1640's determined that Parliament controlled the "purse strings". Meaning that they levied the taxes. After 1763 the British thought that the colonies should help pay the hefty bill from helping defend from the French. So Parliament passes a bunch of fun little taxes forgetting that the colonies had no representation in Parliament.

A. 'A' would be the most obvious answer (look at Congress now...). On the other hand, I would say 'C.' It was their intention to provide a "framework" of government not based on regency but democracy.
